“I want my pieces to make a statement. A work of art in a chair.”

I create beautifully upholstered mid-century modern chairs. Intuitive in my confident use of colour and pattern, and meticulous in my precision when upholstering a chair I have the creative flair to source and develop the beautiful and unusual.

I have a proven record of developing beautiful product. For years my career progressed at Habitat in Product Range Management, working closely with many amazing designers; across furniture, textiles, lighting, ceramics and of course upholstery. This is where my love of chair design and beautiful fabrics grew. I travelled extensively throughout Europe and Asia with the design team sourcing and developing new product for Habitat before deciding in 2010 to set up on my own and focus my skills in this more artisan of crafts. Developing and honing my skills as an upholsterer, I attended an upholstery course for several years. I increasingly found people wanting to buy my chairs and through word of mouth my client base steadily grew.

I work entirely on my own from my workshop in East Sussex, stripping chairs back to the frame before using traditional upholstery methods to revamp a chair. Springs and buttons are hand tied and everything is hand stitched and hand finished to a very high standard. Each piece is unique and a work of craftsmanship.

For me the execution of the finest details are the most satisfying, so when I am buttoning or adding piping and selecting the colours and contrasting fabrics to make a chair look amazing, these are the moments when I find my work its most rewarding.

I hand select all my chairs myself. I have found I am consistently drawn back to chairs from the 1950s era or so called mid-century modern. They offer timeless iconic design that never dates, they have a contemporary, classic, clean aesthetic that I love to work with and are the perfect vehicle for showcasing bold and beautiful fabric. I buy these chairs as stock, from which customers can then choose, and work with them in collaboration to produce a bespoke chair that is one of its kind and totally unique.

Looking at contemporary pieces being designed today, they frequently draw inspiration from the 1950s; the so called egg chair and the cocktail chair which is currently enjoying a deserved and very fashionable moment, g plan chairs and indeed most mid-century styles. See the Available Projects page in the Shop section for a choice of chair frames, alternatively please contact me if you wish to discuss a specific design.

My passion for beautiful colourful fabric is what makes my chairs stand out from the crowd. Colour, pattern and design are always hugely important factors. Historically I have sought out vintage fabric for my pieces, however I have more recently embarked on collaborations with both designers wishing to design their own bespoke fabrics and contemporary textile designers – watch this space, very exciting work in progress– there will be updates on the Features page coming soon!

For me the focus is always to produce a piece that is beautiful, unusual and unique.
